 Distinguished Service Award for 2010

David Diodato

Citation

The award for Distinguished Service is presented to David Diodato for his sustained and imaginative contributions to the Division and the profession. Dave's career has spanned the range from private consultant to government advisor. Throughout this career he has made ongoing extramural contributions that have advanced the profession technically and in the public eye.

One of his most important contributions has been in the public distribution of hydrogeologic information. Dave was one of the first to recognize the power of the Internet for this, and founded “The Hydrogeologist's Home Page” in 1995. This site aggregates information on such things as modeling programs, Earth data, and professional opportunities. In the 15 years of its operation, Dave has continually improved the content and utility. With a visitation rate of 30,000 to 60,000 hits per month, from all over the world, it surely ranks as one of the most successful examples of outreach in the field of hydrogeology.

Dave was the founding editor for the Software Spotlight feature in the journal Ground Water. This feature, which appears in each issue, critically evaluates software that is used for solving hydrogeologic problems. As such, it allows end-users to make informed decisions about purchases and application of such products, saving these geoscientists time, effort, and money.

Dave has been a constant presence in the Division, and a strong advocate for the involvement of students. He's likely to be found introducing students to more senior colleagues, and making sure that they feel a part of the Division. His recent establishment of the "Student Travel and Beer Fund" is just one more thoughtful way that Dave has strengthened the profession.

For his unique and diverse contributions to the profession and the Society, the Hydrogeology Division is pleased to present Dave Diodato with the Distinguished Service Award for 2011.
